Fifteen minutes later, at just after two, we’re all in a café situated in the old Benedictine refectory, nursing coffees and hot chocolates and tucking into steak pies and sausage rolls. I hadn’t realized how hungry I was, and the food grounds me and eradicates the slightly dizzy feeling I was having.

It’s a little warmer in here, a bit stuffy. Someone has written “Chelsea FC,” a London football club, with a finger on the steamed-up window. The place smells of bacon and coffee and damp clothes.

We’ve had to leave Merlin outside, but I buy him a spare sausage roll as a treat to make up for it.

I’ve told them all what happened, enjoying their shock as I reveal who’s led me to the next clue.

“I can’t believe it,” Christian says, shaking his head. “I wish I’d been there. I would so like to have seen the king.”

“It was amazing,” I confess. “I wish you could all have been there, too.”

“So…” Imogen says, “show us the movement he made again.”

I copy the way Edward’s hands suggested he was picking up a round object and placing it on his head.

“I think it’s fairly obvious what that means,” Matthew says. “He’s referring to his crown.”

We all nod, having come to the same conclusion.

“So it means that Woden’s Woe is or was in the crown?” Imogen asks.

“I assume so,” I reply.

“I don’t get it,” Matthew says. “I thought Woden’s Woe was about two-and-a-half inches long? And cloisonné? That doesn’t sound like something that would have been in the crown.”

“Maybe part of it was,” I suggest. “One of the gems. Or maybe it formed the centrepiece of the crown. Nobody knows what the original looked like.”

“The original?” Arthur asks. “So it doesn’t still exist?”

“No,” Christian replies. “It was melted down by the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. Maybe Edward didn’t know that.”

We all sit back, deflated.

“All right,” Arthur says. “So what happened after that? I’ve seen pictures of Queen Elizabeth the Second wearing a crown.”

Christian nods. “Charles the Second had another one made after the Restoration.”

“Does it contain the gems from the original?”

Christian hesitates. “I didn’t think it did. But I’m not a hundred percent sure.”

“Then maybe the Woe was transferred to the new crown,” Arthur says. “Where’s that kept?”

“In the Tower of London,” I reply. “With the rest of the Crown Jewels.”

“Then that’s where we go next,” Hollie says.

“Is it far away?” Arthur asks.

“Nowhere is far away in London,” I tell him. “Now you’ll get your first experience on the Tube.”
